Jeremy Fowler on what he’s hearing about Colts QB Anthony Richardson’s availability vs. Jaguars

In a Saturday morning article from ESPN that features predictions, upset picks, and the latest buzz, Jeremy Fowler provided a brief update on the status of Colts’ quarterback Anthony Richardson for Sunday’s game with the Jaguars.

Update: The Colts have downgraded Richardson to doubtful for Sunday’s game.

According to a source of Fowler’s, Richardson is a game-time decision with the Colts seeing how he feels over the week. Fowler adds that Richardson very much wants to be on the field, but the team needs to make sure he can be himself if out there.

Given that Richardson is listed on the injury report as questionable, I think everything that Fowler mentioned is somewhat to be expected.

However, perhaps more noteworthy is that Fowler concludes by saying that the injury isn’t considered serious and “likely wouldn’t worsen” by playing. The decision is more so about “pain tolerance and functionality,” as Fowler put it.

Richardson sustained the injury in the first half of the Colts eventual win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to exiting the game, Richardson was off to a very fast start, completing 3-of-4 passes for 71 yards, with plays of 32 yards and 28 yards to Michael Pittman.

Those explosive pass plays coupled with the one-two punch of Richardson and Jonathan Taylor in the run game helped the Colts offense jump out to a quick 14-0 start.

Richardson did practice all week in a limited capacity, with backup quarterback Joe Flacco getting plenty of snaps by taking the team reps.

The Colts have already ruled out Taylor, Kwity Paye, and Kenny Moore for Sunday’s game. Inactives will be announced 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday.
