Jennifer Lopez says she was supposed to lock lips with Madonna during the 2003 VMAs performance with Britney Spears – instead of Christina Aguilera.
It was 20 years ago that the chart-topping singers embraced during the glitzy Hollywood awards ceremony, sending fans into a frenzy worldwide.
The iconic pop culture moment could have become slightly more memorable as Jenny from the Block songstress JLo was meant to be in the mix – but couldn’t make it.
Britney began the show by emerging from a wedding cake while performing Madonna's Like a Virgin – just like the pop star did in her 1984 performance.
Moments later, Christina came on stage right before Madonna appeared, beginning her performance of Hollywood – leaning over to kiss Britney.
Christina also received a smooch from Madonna, but the moment wasn't played out during the live broadcast, something she slammed back in 2018.
JLo claims that it was in fact her that was supposed to share a kiss with Madonna, instead of Christina – blaming filming commitments for her absence.
"I was filming a movie in Canada and I met with Madonna and Britney," she told E! News. "And I couldn't get off the film, so they got Christina to do it."
She added: "I'm a huge fan of Madonna, I always have been."
At the time, Christina's moment in the spotlight was cut off as cameras panned to a reaction shot of Britney's former lover Justin Timberlake.
"It was weird. And you know why they cut away for it? Because they cut away to get Justin's reaction," Christina admitted in a previous interview.
She called the production decision a "cheap shot" as Britney and Justin had separated and reflected on feeling 'left out' in the moment.
"I don't think people actually totally realize that she [Madonna] made out with both of you that day," the interview host probed with Christina.
She recalled: "Yeah, because I definitely saw the newspaper the next day and it was like, 'Oh, well, I guess I got left out of that'."
