Jennifer Aniston uses a cream headboard, neutral sheets, and wooden accents for a restorative sleep environment – psychologists love her philosophy

Of all the spaces in a home, our color choice is most significant in the bedroom – a fact that isn't lost on Jennifer Aniston, who has mastered the perfect sleep palette.

Curated in collaboration with celebrity-favored designer Stephen Shadley, Jennifer Aniston's bedroom (in her former home) is a neutral haven, complete with a cream headboard, symmetrical beige lights, sleek wooden cupboards, and white bedding (dressed with brown-purple accessories). Considering the actress's undoubtedly hectic lifestyle, it's unsurprising that she designed a space with relaxation in mind, and her soothing color choices are vital to success, as psychologists explain.

'As a wellness psychologist, I have consistently observed how our surroundings profoundly shape our mental state and overall well-being. Soft, muted colors evoke feelings of calmness and security, both of which are crucial for establishing a restorative sleep environment,' says Ieva Kubiliute from It's Me and You Clinic.

'From a design perspective, these neutral tones serve as a versatile backdrop, allowing for the layering of textures and personal style.'

The power of a neutral bedroom is unlikely to come as a shock, considering these hues are often considered grounding and unintrusive. But what does the science behind it involve? Kubiliute finds the answer in the study of color psychology.

'Research indicates that soft colors can lower heart rates and alleviate anxiety, significantly contributing to a deeper and more restorative sleep cycle. For example, creamy tones mimic the gentle light of dawn, naturally aligning with the body’s circadian rhythms,' she explains. 'In contrast, overly vibrant colors can lead to overstimulation, making it challenging for the mind to find tranquility.'

Following suit involves taking the lead from Aniston, who has set a precedent with her neutral walls. Then, we can experiment more by layering textures and accents in complementary shades. 'This strategy not only enhances visual appeal but also creates an atmosphere that promotes emotional well-being. Ultimately, this design philosophy transforms the bedroom into a sanctuary that invites relaxation and significantly improves sleep quality,' Kubiliute says. For yet more expert suggestions, Kubiliute recommends dimmable bedside lamps to ensure any lamps don't interrupt our sleep schedule.

'Consider soft wool throws, luxurious silk bed linens, or rustic wooden accents, which together enhance the sensory experience of the space. By thoughtfully incorporating warm lighting options such as dimmable bedside lamps or ambient wall fixtures,' she says. 'I can create an inviting atmosphere that not only pleases the eye but also signals to the body that it is time to unwind and relax.'
