The Masked Singer bosses have been accused of deliberately trying to 'throw people off the scent' with a name clue that appeared in Jellyfish's first VT, with fans reminding their fellow viewers that it couldn't be Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child as she has already been on the show.
After wins for Nicola Roberts, Joss Stone and Natalie Imbruglia in the first three series, the show that asks the killer question 'who's that behind the mask?' returned for its fourth run on New Year's Day, with ITV hoping for another ratings winner. As soon as it made its debut in early 2020, The Masked Singer sparked the nation's curiosity and it didn't take long for Twitter to be awash with theories as the first episode of the new series kicked off on Sunday evening.
The launch show saw six characters battle it out in three face-offs and the first of those was competed by Knitting, who many people thought was Cheryl and Jellyfish. One of the stand out clues from Jellyfish's opening VT was the word Me next to a shell, which both viewers at home and the panel in the studio, took to mean that the person hiding in the costume was called Michelle. Davina McCall guessed Our Girl star Michelle Keegan, having also took the word GOA to actual be general of army, in a nod to Michelle's role in the BBC military drama.
Also going down the Michelle route, guesses that appeared on Twitter included EastEnders actress turned stage star Michelle Gayle and Drag Race judge Michelle Visage.
Others thought that 'Me shell' was a hint it could be Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child, particularly given that there were also references to Destiny's Child track Bootylicious in the clues, with Michelle a member of the American girl group.
However, the more clued up viewers on Twitter were quick to remind people that she has been on both the UK and US versions of The Masked Singer already, with her starring as Rockhopper on the UK show last year. Reacting to theories it could be her, one viewer responded: "Everyone saying Michelle Williams for Jellyfish - you're wrong! She was on last season as Rockhopper!!!" Making the same very valid point, another tweeted: "Jellyfish CANNOT be Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child. She's already been on UK, US and Australian's version. Surely four times is a little too much!"
A name that cropped up again and again aside from all the Michelles, was Glee's Amber Riley, who more recently wowed West End audiences in Dreamgirls.
