Jamie Redknapp performs U-turn over "serial underachiever" Mauricio Pochettino

Jamie Redknapp has insisted that "serial underachiever" Mauricio Pochettino isn't good enough for the Manchester United job - despite previously backing him for the role.

Pochettino is just one of the names in the frame for the high-profile vacancy at Old Trafford, which is set to finally be filled in the coming weeks. The United hierarchy have held discussions with the PSG chief and Erik ten Hag in the past week as they continue to edge closer to making an appointment.

While the club have insisted that nothing concrete has been decided, Pochettino and Ten Hag are widely considered to be the two main contenders to succeed Ralf Rangnick when the German's interim reign comes to an end in the summer.

But speculation over the role looks destined to continue until a decision is made one way or another - particularly considering both candidates were sent crashing out of the Champions League prematurely last month.

And in the wake of another dire performance from Manchester United - who could only limp to a 1-1 draw with Leicester on Saturday evening - Redknapp has claimed that the Old Trafford job could be too much for Pochettino; despite publicly calling for him to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in 2019.

Redknapp identified Pochettino's track record of developing players and working wonders with whatever squad is available to him as reasons for United to appoint the ex-Spurs chief instead of Solskjaer during the Norwegian's successful interim reign.

But Redknapp issued a far more damning assessment Pochettino's credentials on Saturday evening; suggesting that there's no reason why he'd succeed at United after failing elsewhere.

Pochettino was haunted during his time in the Premier League by his failure to win a major trophy, despite going close to both domestic and European glory with Spurs. Since moving to PSG, he's won the French cup and is on course to win his first league title this year.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: "[Manchester United] need to get the right manager in. Pochettino has been a serial underachiever; as much as I like him, can he go and do it at Manchester United? There's no real belief that he can.

"Ten Hag's done a great job at Ajax, where you should really win the league [because] you've got the best players. So it's not going to be easy. As much as it's the manager getting them right, it's also that personnel. Because I always think, you look at certain clubs and you go 'I'd love to be in that Liverpool dressing room working with those players', or 'I'd love to be at Manchester City with the players there'.

"I look at that United dressing room and I think 'that looks fractured'. That looks like there's a few poisonous characters who could cause problems - I wouldn't want to be in there. I don't think that's a dressing room that's pulling together."
