Jamie Carragher 'names' old Liverpool enemy as possible Jurgen Klopp successor

Jamie Carragher has revealed that he was recently 'talking' about Diego Simeone possibly replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Anfield legend Carragher claimed that he would 'love to see' the Atletico Madrid manager take over a club in the Premier League. The claim came during the latest episode of The Overlap.

Nicknamed “El Cholo”, Simeone has led Atletico to league titles in 2014 and last year, as well as winning a Copa del Rey and the Europa League twice. The Argentine also helped the Madrid outfit reach the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016, losing on both occasions to city rivals Real Madrid.

And when talk turned to whether Simeone could move to Manchester United in the summer, Carragher dropped an interesting response to the suggestion.

“Yes, I think so. He has that stature,” he said. “Gary (Neville) talks about coming up against him. He has got that presence, hasn’t he? I was talking to someone last night actually about Simeone for Liverpool, talking about when Klopp would leave in a couple of years.

“I would love to see Simeone in the Premier League. To see how he plays. Is it because he’s up against Real Madrid and Barcelona, he is always the underdog. If he went to Manchester United and got as much money as anyone, would he play differently? I am not so sure.”

Simeone moved to clarify his handshake snub of Klopp after Liverpool's 3-2 victory over Atletico back in November, claiming he 'doesn't like the falseness'. The former Argentina international declined the opportunity to shake hands with his counterpart at full-time of the Reds' win in the Spanish capital.

Klopp admitted he was unimpressed by Simeone's decision at the time, but the Los Rojiblancos coach said he did not view the post-match pleasantry in the same way it is seen in English football.

After the second Champions League game between the two teams this season at Anfield, Klopp didn't even bother attempting to embrace Simeone. Only Thiago Alcantara bothered to embrace the Atletico boss following Liverpool’s 2-0 win.
