Jamie Carragher makes strong Thierry Henry point in Arsenal title message vs Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has claimed Arsenal will lose the Premier League title if they are defeated by Liverpool today. The Gunners face Jurgen Klopp's side looking to restore their eight point lead.

Manchester City cut the gap between themselves and the north Londoners after beating Southampton 4-1 on Saturday. Mikel Arteta's side can take an enormous step towards their first title in 19 years with victory at Anfield - their first since 2012.

Carragher has labelled Arsenal's trip to Merseyside as one of their biggest matches in years recently and has urged the current crop of players to take inspiration from north London heroes from years gone by.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the game, the ex-Liverpool defender said: "Listen, I think a lot of those [Arsenal] players will look back times like that [the club’s last Premier League title] or maybe they look up to a Thierry Henry as a bit of a hero but there’s defining games and this will be one.

"If Arsenal lose this I think most of the country will believe City will go on and win it and they may look back at this game, and vice versa if Arsenal go on to win this game. You’ve got to remember the history of Arsenal winning titles at this ground, going back to 1989 and also a couple years later, 1991 they come here in the run-in and I think Paul Merson scored at this [Anfield Road] end.

"This crowd has been involved in games like that, not necessarily Liverpool going on to win the league but we all remember that picture of Kevin Keegan in the dugout, we always think of that game as the game where Newcastle were out of the title race, and maybe the season before the Premier League started Manchester United lost here and that was their title over.

"It is a place where I think if you come here and win in the run-in, you’re fighting for a title, it almost feels like yeah, you’ve passed the acid test."

Arsenal do have another eight games after facing Liverpool, including a trip to Man City and Newcastle. However, today's clash has been touted as a crucial one in how the season could end in May.
