Jamie Carragher has criticised one moment by Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s defeat to Inter Milan.
The Reds lost 1-0 to the Serie A side on Tuesday night in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie but still progressed to the quarter-final as 2-1 aggregate winners.
Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the game in the second half, smashing in from just outside the area to beat the outstretched hand of Alisson Becker.
Throughout the two-legged tie, Van Dijk had virtually nullified Martinez’s threat to Liverpool’s defence at both the San Siro and at Anfield.

However, Carragher feels that the Dutchman could have done better in preventing the goal.
“Yes, I would have got tighter (to Martinez if he was Van Dijk),” the Reds legend on CBS Sports.
“But, for me, as a defender, your natural reaction is to get tighter.
“I must say, the rest of Van Dijk’s game was unbelievable. Some of his passing. The clearances. How cool he was.

“But he could have got a little tighter and it was a wonder goal.
“Inter Milan played very well over the two games. They were probably the better team than Liverpool.
“You can see the difference between Serie A and the Premier League.
“Liverpool are nowhere near their best and still should have come away with two goals given the chances Mo Salah had.”
