Jamie Carragher and Alan Shearer deliver same blunt verdict on big decision that impacted Liverpool

Jamie Carragher and Alan Shearer both believe Wolverhampton Wanderers should have been awarded a penalty against Newcastle United.

Wolves were denied a penalty in the first half of their 2-1 defeat at St. James' Park, while the game was tied at 0-0. Jimenez was bundled over by Pope after he pounced on a poor touch by the England international inside the box.

Referee Andy Madley waved away the appeals, before VAR opted not to intervene and send the official to the pitchside monitor to take another look at the incident. Just six minutes after the incident, Newcastle took the lead through a header from Alexander Isak.

Hwang Hee-Chan levelled for Wolves in the second-half but Miguel Almiron got the winner for Newcastle. The win moved Eddie How’s side two points ahead of Liverpool in the race for top four.

But taking to Twitter after the game, Carragher claimed Pope should have been sent off. He said: “Nick Pope should’ve been sent off & Wolves awarded a penalty at Newcastle.

“The directive from Howard Webb to try & stick with on field decisions as much as possible, was a mistake today. The referee was so far away there was no way he knew what had happened. It doesn’t matter who makes the decision, referee or VAR, as long as we get the right one more often than not.”

Also taking to Twitter during the game, Shearer wrote: “That’s a very lucky escape. Could, probably should have been a pen after that mistake from Pope.”
