Williams Formula 1 team principal James Vowles has set realistic expectations for the Grove outfit for the remainder of the 2026 season after getting off to a rocky start.
After missing private testing in Barcelona and battling against an overweight car, the team currently sits ninth in the constructors' standings with two points, earned by Carlos Sainz at the Chinese Grand Prix.
"There is no chance that we'll be in that position this year, I'd love it to be, but I want to say to everyone's realistic expectations, that we have a long way to go to achieve that," Vowles explained during an interview with Padel player Frankie Langan when asked if Williams could be fighting for the championship this year.
"I think a more realistic goal, which is how I phrased it is last year, was a line in the sand we don't go behind that anymore, continuously treat that as the bare minimum we need to do. So it's points-scoring every race with podiums being picked up, and keep building on that and the momentum.
"So, making sure that against what is a hyper-competitive field, we are still stepping forward relative to them year by year. In terms of the constructors', there's no doubt about it. It's why I'm here. In terms of why it's not this year, it's because there are investments that we're doing that really will only come to fruition between '28 to '30.
"Large investments, but they're not machines you buy off the shelf. They're not systems you buy off the shelf, but it's a realistic timeline for us. And so what I want to do is set the expectations of the world, but I'm confident we'll step forward.
"But it will just be steps forward rather than a leap. There's not a person literally in the paddock that I've spoken to that has any idea how this year is going to go."
F1 will resume after a five-week break at the Miami Grand Prix from 1-3 May.
