James Tavernier offers Rangers 'standards' response to Partick Thistle controversy

James Tavernier insists allowing Partick Thistle to equalise at Ibrox was the right thing to do after Malik Tillman's controversial goal.

The Ibrox captain admitted it was only fair for Rangers to step aside and let Thistle score to make it 2-2.

Furious scenes had erupted after Tillman had pinched the ball from Kevin Holt before rounding Jamie Sneddon and poking home.

Partick Thistle players were enraged by the goal as Holt was set to play the ball back to Rangers following a stoppage for Tillman to receive treatment.

The Bayern Munich loanee was seemingly unaware of the sporting gesture which led to his finish and the ensuing chaos.

Michael Beale then stepped in an told his players to step aside to allow Thistle to score.

It was a decision that was the only thing to do in the situation according to Tavernier.

"I think Malik didn't really know what was happening," said Tavenier on Viaplay. "He just responded to the throw in and went on with it.

"We are high in standards as Rangers Football Club and it was only the right thing to do to let them score the goal.

“It was about carrying on after that and trying to get through to the next round.

“Thistle gave everything. But it wasn’t to our standards. We have to improve.”

On Rangers overall performance, Tavernier added: “I was disappointed with the way we played.

“I thought the first half was not at our standards. We conceded the penalty from not marking in the box.

“It was about going in the second half and trying to play better. I thought we played better and got the win. That’s the main thing."
