James Lowe out of Leinster's Champions Cup semi-final clash with Toulouse

James Lowe is out Leinster's Champions Cup semi-final clash with Toulouse on Saturday, but Josh van der Flier and Ryan Baird are on course to feature in the Aviva Stadium fixture.

Lowe suffered a calf injury in the province's quarter-final victory over Leicester Tigers and the influential winger has lost his race against time to be fit for the encounter with Toulouse, the side Leinster overcame in last year's semi-final only to then lose to La Rochelle in the decider.

Jimmy O'Brien is likely to get the nod in place of Lowe, while Jordan Larmour is another option.

Lowe's absence is a blow to the province, who remain without skipper Johnny Sexton - and are expected to be without the out-half for the remainder of the campaign.

Rhys Ruddock and Ed Byrne are also ruled out following the province's trip to South Africa over the past fortnight.

Ruddock and Byrne were two of the squad's most senior members on the trip as the frontliners remained at home to prepare for the Toulouse game.

But back row Ruddock injured his hamstring against the Lions and had a procedure at the weekend while prop Byrne injured his tricep in the second half against the Bulls and will be unavailable for selection.

Baird and van der Flier, however, will step up their rehab this week and a final decision will be made on their availability in the coming days.

Baird suffered a shoulder injury in the Leicester game, while van der Flier missed that fixture due to an ankle injury he sustained in the last 16 win against Ulster.

The fixture has probably come too early for centre Charlie Ngatai, who returned to training last week following a hamstring injury, but he will be further assessed as the week progresses.

However Ngatai could be a bench option for Leo Cullen. The experienced back hasn't featured since early January.

Meanwhile Vakhtang Abdaladze was withdrawn from the game against the Lions with a neck injury, while Michael Milne - Leinster's only try scorer in last Saturday's heavy loss to the Bulls and is going through return to play protocols.

Along with Tommy O'Brien, who injured his shoulder against the Bulls, the pair will be further assessed this week.
