James Garner sends incoming Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag emphatic message

Manchester United fans are already looking towards next season, with Champions League football now unattainable.

The Red Devils head into Monday's game with Brentford knowing, even though it's mathematically possible, fourth place is out of the question after another forgettable campaign. United's supporters hope Erik ten Hag's arrival in the summer can signal a fresh start after years in the wilderness.

Whilst things are not rosy at Old Trafford, a pair of their players are looking to end the season strongly out on loan.

Players were dispatched by the club to all levels of the English Football League (EFL). Here, we look at how they got on over the bank holiday weekend.

James Garner

Garner's outstanding form for Nottingham Forest continued on Saturday with the midfielder chipping in with two assists in their 5-1 hammering of Swansea City.

The 21-year-old teed up two of Sam Surrdige's goals as he sealed a first-ever career hat-trick. It took Garner's assists tally to 10 for the season. But that only told part of the story. Garner caught the eye with a joint-high 46 touches for Forest, making eight key passes including those two assists.

He also chipped in defensively with a healthy contribution of four tackles to ensure Forest remain in with a shout of automatic promotion.

Steve Cooper's side travel to Bournemouth on Tuesday in a game between second and third. Reports suggest Garner will be given a proper chance to impress incoming United boss Erik ten Hag but before then his sole aim is helping Forest seal a spot in the Premier League for next season.

Ethan Laird

Laird's strange spell at Bournemouth continued at the weekend, with the winger not even making it into the Cherries' 18-man squad for their win away at Blackburn.

The omission was not thought to be injury-related with Laird having travelled with the squad up to Ewood Park. A 3-0 win keeps Scott Parker's side second ahead of that mammoth meeting with Forest on Tuesday.

Laird had started the previous four league games for Bournemouth after an extended spell out of the side. With just two more games left, he may have potentially had his last game-time of the season.

Di'Shon Bernard

Bernard kept his customary place on the Hull City bench on Saturday and was probably thankful.

For a third game in a row, and the tenth time in the last 11 games, Bernard was an unused sub as Hull were hammered 5-0 at Bristol City in a dead rubber game.

Ethan Galbraith

Galbraith's loan spell at Doncaster Rovers ended on a sour note as his temporary employers' relegation from League One was sealed.

They needed to not only win by a huge margin away at Oxford, but were reliant on a clutch of teams above them all losing. It was not to be as Rovers could only muster a 1-1 draw with Galbraith an unused sub in their final outing.

The 20-year-old's spell started brightly but relegation will not have been how he wanted his first taste of regular senior football to end.

Nathan Bishop

Bishop has starred for Nigel Clough's Mansfield this season and he will keep goal for them in their crucial Bank Holiday Monday trip to Salford City.

A victory could potentially move the Stags into the third and final League Two automatic promotion spot, depending on what Port Vale do. With just one weekend of the regular season there is all to play for.

Reece Devine

Devine was an unused sub in Walsall's entertaining 2-2 draw away at Colchester. Walsall finish their season at home to Swindon on Saturday.
