Jamelia to join Hollyoaks cast as singing icon takes on permanent role

Jamelia has joined the cast of Hollyoaks, it's been announced - after having previously appeared in a guest role on the Channel 4 soap opera two years ago.

The singer, 42, is reprising her role as Sharon Bailey, whom she first portrayed in a special episode which aired in 2021. She's now said to be a full-time cast member on the show.

The character - who is set to return in an episode later this month - is the mother of Zoe Anderson (played by Garcia Brown) and the daughter of Pearl Anderson (Dawn Hope).

Sharon is set to arrive in the village later this month for a Mother's Day episode, with the resident paediatrician paying a surprise visit to her daughter and mother.

New photos of Jamelia, who is said to have been filming since January, on the set of the Channel 4 show have been released ahead of her upcoming on-screen return.

She said: "I just can't tell you how happy I am to be back at Hollyoaks. We’ve been having the best time on set and I already have lovely friends here, some old, some new."

The actor teased that her character's arrival "unsettles the family dynamic" and said it's "complicated" with the three generations but "hopefully that is relatable" to viewers.

She added: "Sharon hasn't always prioritised her daughter and her mum is stuck in the middle. There's a lot for them to work through and I can’t wait for viewers to see how that plays out on screen."

Jamelia's character Sharon is said to feature in an upcoming storyline with Felix Westood (Richard Blackwood) and Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) on the show.
