Jacob Murphy explains priceless reaction to second Newcastle goal in emphatic Tottenham win

Jacob Murphy has explained his wide-eyed celebration to his second goal was in 'shock' at Newcastle United's lightning start against Tottenham. The winger netted twice and grabbed the Magpies' third in the opening nine minutes at St James' Park as Eddie Howe's side registered an incredible 6-1 win over their top-four rivals.

Murphy has enjoyed a run in the starting eleven due to Miguel Almiron's recent injury, and kept his place in the side as Sean Longstaff replaced Anthony Gordon in the only change from the defeat at Aston Villa. The former Norwich City star rewarded Howe for his show of faith with a brace in the first 10 minutes, opening the scoring after pouncing on a rebound in the six-yard box.

Joelinton doubled the lead shortly after by rounding Hugo Lloris, before Murphy made a dream start even better with an impressive strike from range. The cameras zoomed in on the 28-year-old, who seemingly could not believe he had already grabbed his second of the match.

The image was unsurprisingly quickly picked up on social media, with the club's account sharing it after the full-time whistle with the caption 'Beautiful Sunday'. Reacting to the celebration, Murphy told the club's website: "People will talk about my reaction to the strike and saying I was shocked, it was more being shocked we were three-nil up after nine minutes. Good strike, good goal, happy days!"

Murphy's brace was quickly followed by a double from Alexander Isak as Newcastle took a five-goal lead into the break. Substitute Callum Wilson also netted after the break following Harry Kane's consolation strike, and the winger was asked whether he had seen 'anything like' the opening 20 minutes as a player or a fan.

Murphy added: "No, I think the boys ran out of celebration ideas in the end! It was just such a great day, a great start, and it was about taking accountability from previous games and starting in the right way. We did that."
