Jack Butland makes 'different approach' Rangers admission after loss to Lyon

Jack Butland has conceded Rangers caused their own issues in defeat to Lyon.

The Ibrox goalkeeper - who ended the match with the captain's armband - was left frustrated as Rangers gifted Lyon opportunities to punish them in the Europa League.

Butland, 31, suggested a different approach might have been needed in moments from Rangers as he cited the inability to stop the French club finding their rhythm be it by making a foul or cutting out an attack.

"A really good team," Butland said reflecting on the 4-1 loss. "They have got some serious individual quality. The disappointment for us is that we gave them too many easy opportunities for them to showcase that.

"It's one of those you wish you could do it over again because I think we'd have a...you hate to say it but I think there's a different approach that we needed or there wasn't enough quite from us in those moments to cut out the attack, make a foul, stop them getting in their stride.

"The disappointment is the fact that we gave them some easy opportunities to showcase some serious individual talent. In that sense, it looks like on that is worse than it is but we probably caused our own issues."

He continued: "We allowed it to be a little bit too end to end. We want to make teams feel it and I think we did, the atmosphere was brilliant and we put them under some pressure early - they weren't able to play it out the back as much as they wanted and there were things we managed to get them stressing about.

"But we didn't kill that and didn't allow it to stay that was by taking some good chances that we created.

"In the end you start to give away opportunities and it starts to get away from you. Some factors that  we really could have done better and we need to learn from but certainly a lot of encouragement as well that we sort of almost did it to ourselves."
