ITV1's Ant and Dec's Limitless Win sees mother-and-son duo break records but leave with nothing

The season two finale of ITV1's Ant and Dec's Limitless Win saw mother-and-son duo Tracey-Jane and Troy surpass more than £1 million on the game show. The series sees contestants climb a Limitless Ladder by answering numerical answers to questions.

In order to remain in the game contestants are not allowed to answer with a number over the correct answer. A lower-than-correct answer loses lives, but if they have lives left they can still climb the ladder. To bank the money, participants have to get the exact number.

Attempting to conquer the Limitless Ladder together during the season two finale were Doctor Who fans Troy, 23 and Tracey-Jane, 58. The mother-and-son duo from Liverpool said they were the best of friends and "basically the same person" as they introduced themselves on the quiz show.

Before starting the game the pair received a message from none other than David Tennant who appeared via video link, much to Troy and Tracey's shock, to wish them good luck. And it would appear his words helped, kind of, as the pair climbed up the famous ladder, surpassing the £1 million mark on the quiz show.

The milestone was the furthest any contestant had ever been up the ladder, with host Dec telling The Mirror the excitement in the studio was "electric". However, despite the record-breaking climb, Tracey-Jane and Troy failed to get an exact number and eventually left with nothing.

By the time the pair reached £250,000 they had only banked £500 and had two lives left, after incorrectly guessing 12 to the £1,000,000 question, when the answer was 14, the pair lost those lives and went into a sudden death round.

With Dec explaining it was the "last throw of the dice," the duo had a go at answering the next questions but fell short. Despite going home empty-handed, Dec told Troy and Tracey-Jane: "Wow you gave us one hell of a ride."

While Ant explained: "You went further up that ladder than anyone has ever gone." For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
