This Morning fans were left less than impressed as they tuned into the new episode. Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were back at the helm of the ITV daytime programme on Tuesday (March 7) when they kicked off the second show of the week with a divisive subject.
Instead of teasing what was to come on the show or getting stuck straight into This Morning's View segment, which sees the duo joined by two guests to discuss the latest news headlines, Holly and Phillip were joined by their first guest.
Joining them at the kitchen bar was Sarah Merker, who had recently completed a decade-long mission to find the best scone. Sarah shared how she wanted to get her money's worth after joining the National Trust with her late husband Pete and so started a blog in which she wrote about each site she visited.
And each post saw her rating the scone she had at the on-site cafe out of five. Sarah spoke about how her husband was slightly bemused at the project at first but went along with it. But in a heartbreaking twist, Sarah ended up completing the challenge alone as her husband died in 2018.
But in his honour, she wanted to make her last stop on her National Trust tour somewhere they had been together which ended up being Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.
However, the segment soon had viewers flocking to social media and Holly, 42, even predicted what was to come as opening the segment, she said: "I can hear people screaming, 'say scone!'"
Phillip, 60, turned to their guest and said: "After 10 years of research you still wouldn't have sorted this out?" to which Sarah replied: "Oh no, you can never get to the bottom of the scone conundrum right? It’ll run on forever, there’s so much contention around scones."
And she would be right. @fuzzybeepants tweeted: "This segment is making me want to scream already and it's 10:02 It's Scone not scon. #ThisMorning." @MissAliciaWhite wrote: "#ThisMorning I’m sorry but it’s SCONE it’s not spelt SGONE is it!!!" @heylaurahey_ asked: "Is this a joke ?? They got a scone expert on the show and she says SCON ?!? #ThisMorning."
@darceybun13 posted: "#ThisMorning you don’t say ston for stone! the e softens the n. say scone!!!" @Crazier typed: "#thismorning it’s Cone with an S in front!" But @kezzab777 added: "It's scone - pronounced gone - end of.... #sconegate #ThisMorning."
