ITV This Morning's Michael Mosley shares new diet that helped him lose a stone in 21 days

Michael Mosley has shared details of a new diet that helped him lose a stone in 21 days.

With January well under way, people may be thinking of ways to aid weight loss to achieve New Year's resolution goals. The health guru regularly features on This Morning to offer diet advice and his methods have proved increasingly popular over the years.

Dr Mosley was named "medical journalist of the year" by the British Medical Association for a ground-breaking programme on Helicobacter pylori and is the creator of The Fast 800 diet.

This rapid weight loss diet involves eating 800 calories a day. The medical expert has devised an addition to his Fast 800 series, which incorporates the principles of a short term low-carb, ketogenic Mediterranean diet with intermittent fasting - as Coventry Live reports.

The diet sees your body go into ketosis, meaning it begins to convert your fat stores into fuel, you lose weight and maintain muscle.

According to a listing for the book, Dr Mosley's Fast 800 Keto diet, it is more effective than a conventional keto regime, healthier and more sustainable. He said: "The secret to this new approach is that it combines keto with intermittent fasting, which means you go into ketosis faster, while also being able to enjoy delicious Mediterranean-style food."

The doctor followed the plan himself after Christmas and lost a stone over 21 days following the eating excesses of the festive period.

How to follow The Fast 800 Keto Diet

Following a keto diet basically means reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat, while increasing protein, healthy fats, fruit and vegetables. This dovetails perfectly with the life-extending Mediterranean diet, built around fruit, vegetables, seafood, beans and nuts.

In The Fast 800 Keto, Dr Mosley recommends following the rule of 50:50. Keeping carbohydrates under 50g per day and ensuring protein remains above 50g, all while keeping your daily calorie intake around 800 to 1,000.

Dr Michael explained in an Instagram video the diet's basics, he said: "When you're on a Keto diet, the main thing is to cut out the sugary stuff, but also the carbs - that means things like potatoes and rice. Instead, you pile in all those luscious, green leafy veg.

"The point of a Keto diet, is when you go on it, you lose weight very fast, but it also suppresses your hunger hormone, something called ghrelin. On top of that, it also helps preserve your muscles."

This diet is very restrictive and is not designed to be kept to in the longer term. In fact, thefast800.com recommends following it for no more than 12 weeks, or until you have achieved a normal BMI (body mass index). Then, you are encouraged to move to The New 5:2 or Way of Life.

The New 5:2 is 'fasting' on two days a week by restricting calories to 800, while Way of Life is a "nutritionally-balanced guide to eating a healthy Mediterranean-style diet for life".
