ITV The Masked Singer fans at loggerheads over whether Rhino is James Arthur or Charlie Simpson

Online fans of The Masked Singer are agreed they know the identity of Rhino on the ITV show. But they appear to be completely split down the middle over whether the mystery vocalist is Charlie Simpson from the boyband Busted or former X Factor winner James Arthur.

Both sides have become so entrenched in their views that two distinct groups appear to have formed on social media. Members of each camp are convinced they're right about Rhino's identity and some have expressed their disbelief at those on the other side for thinking differently.

Rhino delivered a powerful rendition of P!nk’s Try while dressed as a cowboy for their performance on Saturday night's edition of the show. Based on the quality of the voice, the judges thought it could be US singer Joe Jonas, rugby player and former The X Factor: Celebrity contestant Thom Evans, or US actor Anthony Edwards.

Arthur, who won the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012, was mentioned as one of their guesses. Many viewers at home strongly agreed with this line of thinking while others were left gobsmacked that the panel hadn't mentioned Fightstar lead singer Simpson.

Twitter user paige took to the social media platform to throw shade at those guessing Rhino is Arthur. She wrote: "nothing is making me cringe more than those who are saying rhino is james arthur when it's in fact charlie simpson"

Clare, referring to the Impossible singer's history with judge Rita Ora, commented: "I highly doubt James Arthur would go on this after the whole thing with Rita Ora. I have no doubt it’s Charlie Simpson!"

Christine Bass agreed, saying: "So, the performance is now up on YouTube and I've listened to it again. I can see how some could mistake him for James Arthur last week, but this week .. seriously?? Doesn't sound anything like JA. Listen to the little gasps at the end of lines - pure Charlie Simpson, every time"

Rachel Jones added: "I will die on my Charlie Simpson hill while y'all scream about James Arthur. The clues and voice fit Charlie perfectly. I grew up with Charlie and Busted and I refuse to change my mind on something I am essentially qualified in from my childhood/teen years."

Others took the complete opposite view, however, as Courtney said: "I can understand why people think Rhino is Charlie Simpson bc the voice sounds similar but if you listen to James Arthur and than listen to Rhino you can clearly tell it's James Arthur the voice and tone match perfectly plus the clues match to James Arthur it's definitely him"

Capri wrote: "No but really if Charlie Simpson left Busted because he was too cool for it and then ended up on #MaskedSingerUK, then I’d be shocked. It’s James Arthur man!"

Natalie Whitaker agreed, saying: "i just love how the internet is divided into "rhino is james arthur" and "rhino is charlie simpson" camps rn he's james arthur tho"

Kealan Doherty remarked: "It’s obvs james Arthur’s voice! Listen to Charlie Simpson on Spotify…it’s deffo not him!"

The final word must surely go to Twitter user Gobbynorthener, however, who mused: "Plot twist Rhino is Charlie Simpson doing a James Arthur Impression"

Who do you think is behind Rhino's mask? It is James or Charlie or someone completely different? Let us know in the comments.
