ITV's Lorraine Kelly alarmed as Doctor Hilary delivers health warning live on air

Lorraine Kelly looked totally startled by a health warning given by guest Doctor Hilary Jones during her show on Thursday, as he delivered a shocking finding about the amount of salt in bread.

A regular on TV for the last three decades now and an almost constant presence during the Covid pandemic, Dr Hilary was back to join Lorraine as she broadcast live to the nation for the fourth time this week and the famous GP did not hold back when it came to delivering some alarming facts.

After colleague Andi Peters had promoted a competition, the camera cut back to Lorraine in the ITV studio, with the host looking horrified as she remarked: "Now, reports today...this is a bit of a shocker. A slice of bread contains as much salt in just one slice as a bag of ready salted crisps!"

Turning to Dr Hilary, she added: "I'm really shocked by that! I mean, you think you're doing well, you're taking care of yourself and, if you've got to cut down on salt, you don't expect it to be in a slice of bread."

The TV medic replied: "No, you really don't, do you? But Action on Salt have looked at 242 different loaves of sliced bread, examined them....three quarters of them, as you say, have, in one slice, as much as salt as ready salted crisps.

"That's a worry and, the worst one, two slices of bread gives you a fifth of your daily total recommended intake of salt."

He continued: "Why is that bad news? Because salt leads to high blood pressure, which over many years can lead to increased risk of strokes, heart attacks and other forms of heart disease."

Giving people tips on how to cut down on salt, Dr Hilary added: "Cut down on processed foods; some pizzas contain more salt per weight than sea water. So it's easy, if you're buying the wrong stuff, to have too much salt."
