ITV GMB doctor Amir Khan GP issues urgent Covid warning as 'hospital admissions' set to spike again

A GP has said that rising covid rates in a certain age group are "particularly worrying".

Dr Amir Khan was on GMB this morning talking about covid. The best-selling doctor - who has 183k followers on Twitter - opened up about his worries.

Dr Khan GP said that covid rates are at their highest ever according to a study. He said that, in the last three of weeks of March, more than six per cent of England's population had covid.

Dr Khan said: "It is rising in the over 55s age group and that is particularly worrying, because they are likely to have underlying health conditions.

"Age itself is a risk factor for becoming seriously ill. We are in a much better position than before in terms of vaccinations and treatment options, but there is a real concern among experts that this is going to lead to an increase in hospital admissions."

Coronavirus cases are at their highest ever level in the UK and, among others, that is having an impact on some critical services such as travel and healthcare. Locally, the number of people being hospitalised with Covid-19 at North Bristol NHS Trust has reached the highest level since January 2021, amid concern over case levels rising across the UK.

The trust, which manages Southmead and Cossham hospitals, hit an average figure of 19.4 coronavirus patients being admitted to hospital per day over a seven-day period on March 24, the latest day from which data is available.
