Emmerdale fans were quick to point out a blunder as Cathy Hope finally discovered her diagnosis. Viewers of the ITV soap have watched as the teen has been struggling with mood swings for months which she was thought was the result of her heavy periods. However, as her behaviour spiralled out of control, Cathy was taken to hospital.
The daughter of Bob Hope had a manic episode when she skipped school before a Tequila Rocks gig with her friends. She had grabbed a bottle of alcohol and was dancing on a bridge before Bob and partner Wendy Posner came to her rescue, swiftly followed by doctors Manpreet Sharma and Liam Cavanagh.
Manpreet advised Bob to take Cathy to the hospital for an assessment. A nurse later explained to Bob, Wendy and Brenda Walker that Cathy has been referred to the adolescent mental health services, something that further upset Cathy.
However, during Monday night's trip to the Dales (March 20), viewers of the ITV soap saw Manpreet catch Wendy researching possible reasons for Cathy’s behaviour online. Manpreet then made a suggestion of her own and later, they both sat Bob down and told him they think that Cathy may have Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
If this was the case, Cathy could suffer from the symptoms up until the menopause. Bob wanted to keep this unconfirmed diagnosis a secret from Cathy, but she overheard their conversation and confronted him before storming out. She was later found by Bob and the pair shared a heart-ot-heart.
And Emmerdale viewers have been raising the soap for tackling PDD, which according to the Mind charity is a very severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that causes a range of emotional and physical symptoms every month during the week or two before your period.
@saraaco said: "I’m so happy that you are covering PMDD! You don’t understand how much it means to finally get some recognition for this debilitating condition! It’s so important to raise awareness of this." @i.am.woman.2021 commented: "Thank you for bringing awareness to this. I was misdiagnosed with bipolar for 15 years and what i actually have is PMDD… Take a bow Emmerdale." @lainey_smiles added: "I have never heard of this condition until now. Well done Emmerdale for raising awareness."
Others, however, were quick to point out an 'unprofessional' problem when it came to Manpreet and Wendy's behaviour over Cathy's health. @lindamorley51 said: "Unprofessional discussing Cathy’s condition with her father out of the surgery." @angenevs tweeted: "Like they’d discuss Cathy’s health issue with her dad and not her #emmerdale."
@DionPetrie said: "Cathy is 16 Manpreet should be talking to her #Emmerdale." @JamieTVandNews asked: "Cathy's your patient. So why are you telling Bob instead of her? #Emmerdale." @pam_debeauvoir added: "Why the heck don't they talk with Cathy. She's the one suffering, not Bob #Emmerdale."
