Coronation Street fans flocked to Twitter in delight as soap favourite Dame Maureen Lipman was on sparkling form in her role as sharp-tonged grandmother Evelyn Plummer. As an added treat to their Monday night viewing Corrie viewers were taken on a trip down memory lane as Dame Maureen delivered the classic line from one of her beloved 80s British Telecom adverts.
Dame Maureen famously starred as doting grandmother Beattie Bellman who chatted on the phone to her grandson Anthony who has just failed all of his exams, except pottery and sociology. “He gets an ology and he says he's failed. You get an ology and you’re a scientist,” Beattie told him reassuringly.
And in the latest Corrie instalment Dame Maureen clearly revelled in saying 'ology' again as Jim Fizz the 'mixologist extraordinaire' made an entrance at the Rovers Return in an attempt to charm the ladies. When Jim, played by comedian Smug Roberts, introduced himself Evelyn asked: "You're a what?"

And when landlady Jenny Connor told her "he mixes cocktails" she replied "he says he's got an ology." The star, in character as Evelyn, then glanced down wrily as the comments came pouring in.
Sally Ann Matthews who plays Jenny tweeted proudly: "Is ‘ology’ trending yet??!! x #Corrie." @AliCat3635 said: "Spotted it straight away. Classic BT commercial with Maureen Lipman.
@monkeykezza tweeted with applause emojis: "Again to the #Corrie writers who gave Maureen Lipman the 'he’s got an ‘ology' line. Brilliant." @HazelMSmith3 said: "Bet the glorious #MaureenLipman had a hand in that getting on the 'ology' onto the programme."
@1HayleyC praised: "'He said he's got an ology' @itvcorrie brilliant script writing @maureenlipman you stole the show." And @ggeenie asked: "Did anyone else take a trip back to the 80s while watching #corrie? Maureen Lipman saying “he’s got an ‘ology’'. Class!"
The actress and comedian was made a dame in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to charity, entertainment and the arts. In 2018 she re-joined the cast of Coronation Street, after playing snooty landlady Lillian Spencer back in 2002, this time playing Evelyn the long-lost grandmother of Tyrone Dobbs.
The mixologist character Jim appeared to stir things up for Cathy Matthews and Brian Packham. As Brian wittered on about the new life he has planned for them in Cornwall, Evelyn could see Cathy wasn't as enthused and told Brian he needed a different approach.
When Brian suggested to Cathy they get married, she was unimpressed by his unromantic proposal and drowned her sorrows at the Rovers. A drunken Cathy found herself outside the pub with newcomer Jim as he piled on the flattery and Evelyn was horrified to find them in a clinch as Brian tried to find her.
On Wednesday Evelyn advises a hungover Cathy to come clean about her misgivings. But instead Cathy tells Brian that in answer to his question she would like to marry him and Brian is thrilled.
