It's time to check whether you could own a 50p piece worth £150

Got any old 50p pieces knocking around your home? If the answer to that question is yes, then you could literally be coining it in.

Certain versions of the seven-sided coin can fetch up to three figures and they don't even need to be that old, with one rare type from 2009 sold on eBay for £150 last month. That 50p piece was launched to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens' opening in 1759, reports the Liverpool Echo.

On the tails side, it features the Royal Botanic Garden's famous Chinese Pagoda, while the Queen's head adorns the other side. The Royal Mint estimate that 210,000 were made with website Coin Hunter putting a valuation of at least £140 on the commemorative coin.

Which? has compiled a list of the most valuable 50p pieces and you could be quids in too if you have the Judo Olympics coin in your possession. Featuring an image of two grappling judokas, it was released in 2011 as part of a 29-coin collection to mark the following year's Olympic Games in London.

A total of 1,161,500 Judo coins were released into circulation and, according to Coin Hunter, one that is in good condition is worth around £10, although eBay has attracted bids as high as £18 for them. A similar number of 2012 Olympic football 50p pieces were also made. It bears an image depicting the offside rule and has been valued at £13, although an eBay listing again saw one sell for more when it went for £22.
