As Britain sweltered in record-breaking temperatures during the heatwave, weather forecasters suffered high levels of trolling on social media. Much of the abuse was directed at links between the 40C heat and climate change.
The BBC said its forecasters received hundreds of tweets or emails which were abusive. Today, it was reported that human-caused climate change made last week's record-breaking heatwave at least 10 times more likely, according to a study by a team of international scientists.
Much of the UK sweltered in the heatwave, with a new record temperature for the country of 40.3C set at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, 1.6C hotter than the previous record set just three years ago. The heat on July 18 and 19 caused widespread disruption to transport networks and hundreds of fires, including devastating blazes that destroyed homes, pushed London to the brink of blackouts and is expected to have caused hundreds of deaths.
