Israel Believed To Have Targeted IRGC Leaders In Damascus Airstrike

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei visits the IRGC Aerospace Force achievements exhibition in Tehran

The United States has assessed that Israel was responsible for the recent airstrike in Damascus, targeting what Iran claimed to be a consulate building. Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh stated that their assessment indicated the presence of several top leaders from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at the site, although their identities could not be confirmed at the time.

Despite these claims, the Israeli government has not officially acknowledged its involvement in the airstrike. Singh further mentioned that the Pentagon was not informed by Israel about the strike or its intended target in Damascus. Israel, on the other hand, refuted Iran's assertion that the building hit was a consulate, asserting that it was a military facility belonging to the Quds forces, a unit of the IRGC.

Regarding the nature of the building struck, Singh admitted that she could not verify the specific type of structure affected by the attack. She emphasized that since the strike was not conducted by the United States, detailed information about the building was limited. However, she reiterated the US stance against attacks on diplomatic facilities, emphasizing the importance of respecting such premises.
