Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe swiftly brought centre-backs Fabian Schar and Sven Botman back into the heart of defence.
The pair had been left out at Anfield in favour of Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn. But Lascelles was benched again and Burn did not feature from the start for the first time in the Premier League this term.
Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett were the Magpies' picks at full-back. Joe Willock, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff were the trio in midfield.
