Is Netflix's Inventing Anna a true story? Sham 'Heiress' who conned New York's elite

Netflix's Inventing Anna has taken viewers by surprise, shocked at the stunning events contained in the programme.

The show follows Anna Delvey as she convinces New York's richest to part with their cash, and the reporter trying to uncover her misdemeanours.

Behind the show is a story of intrigue, crime and obsession that leads to a high-profile trial and some high-profile members of the American elite being left red-faced.

Actress Julia Garner, who plays Anna, said: "It's about the American dream. There is a fine line between greed and the American dream.

"Anna is pretty much telling people what they want to hear. That is the thing that she does."

With some spoilers, here is everything you need to know about the story.

So who is Anna Delvey and is she real?

Inventing Anna is based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, a Russian-born German fraudster.

Anna, who adopted the name Delvey, set out to con New York's social scene, lying about who she was and gaining their trust and money.

She left Germany at the age of 19 to study fashion in Paris, before deciding to move to the Big Apple in 2013.

Sorokin, now 31, had managed to defraud banks and wealthy New Yorkers between 2013 and 2017 by pretending to be a wealthy heiress. Her cons totalled well over several hundred thousand pounds.

The Netflix also portrays journalist Vivian, based on reporter Jessica Pressler, who broke the story in New York Magazine and her attempts to get to the bottom of Anna's actions and relationships with 'friends'.

Anna Sorokin is currently behind bars awaiting deportation to Germany.

The shimmering mirage of Anna's fake life eventually came crashing down as the authorities caught up with her.

Banks and hotels eventually cottoned onto the idea that she was a sham, as was the Anna Delvey Foundation, used to con people out of yet more money.

She was eventually arrested in 2017 and was believed to have stolen over £200,000.

Her trial found her guilty in 2019 on eight charges including attempted grand larceny in the first degree, grand larceny in the second degree, and grand larceny in the third degree. Larceny is essentially another word for theft.

She was sentenced to four to 12 years but released in February 2021, before being taken into custody again for overstaying her visa.

The Netflix show is now available in the UK from 8am today, February 10.

There are nine one-hour episodes for audiences to get their teeth into, which came about partly from a £230,000 fee paid to Sorokin for permission for the series.

Those interested in the story can also read the book My Friend Anna, written by former pal Rachel Williams.

HBO is also working on a series.
