Is cold drink the cause of hair fall?

If you are a man worried about losing your hair, the answer might be simpler than you think: it could be time to ditch the soda. A recent study published in the journal Nutrients, suggests that even drinking just one soda per day could be linked to a greater risk of hair loss. Researchers from Tsinghua University in Beijing found a significant association between consuming sugar-sweetened beverages and male pattern hair loss (MPHL), even with just one drink a day.

What is male pattern hair loss?

MPHL is the most common form of hair loss in men, affecting around 30-50% of men by the age of 50. What's worrying is that recent studies suggest the rate of MPHL may be increasing, affecting 27.5% of men in 2021, up from 21.3% in 2010. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, MPHL is a non-scarring form of hair loss related to genetics, anxiety, sleep patterns, age, body mass index, disease history, physical activities, and smoking.

The role of sugar in hair loss

The study conducted by researchers at Tsinghua University aimed to explore whether sugar-sweetened beverages contribute to MPHL. They analysed data from 1,028 Chinese men aged between 18 and 45, collected between January and April 2022. The results were striking: men who consumed higher levels of sugar-sweetened beverages were at a significantly higher risk of hair loss, even with just one drink per day. The risk increased with higher consumption levels.

However, the study authors themselves acknowledge the need for further research to confirm a direct link between sugar-laden drinks and hair loss. At this point, there is only a statistical association between these two variables, and it’s not clear whether one causes the other.

How can it be prevented and other treatment options?

Despite the need for further research, experts agree that prevention and early treatment of MPHL can make a significant difference. Seeking out a board-certified dermatologist and starting treatment early is crucial. Treatments like topical minoxidil and oral finasteride can help preserve hair before significant loss occurs. An overall approach to treatment is also essential, focusing on holistic health. This includes managing underlying medical issues like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as adopting a well-balanced diet and quitting smoking.

While the link between sugary drinks and hair loss is still being researched, it’s clear that reducing sugar consumption can have numerous health benefits.
