Is CMS Energy Stock Outperforming the S&P 500?

CMS Energy Corporation (CMS), headquartered in Jackson, Michigan, is a prominent energy company focused on providing electric and natural gas services to millions of customers across Michigan, with a market cap of $20.86 billion.

Companies valued at $10 billion or more are classified as "large-cap" stocks, and CMS Energy exemplifies this category with its strong regional presence and consistent growth in the energy sector. As a leader in electric and natural gas services, CMS Energy plays a critical role in delivering reliable energy solutions while driving innovation through clean energy initiatives, contributing to a more sustainable future for its customers and communities.

CMS shares are trading 1.3% below their 52-week high of $70.74, which they hit on Sep. 17. The stock has gained 17.4% over the past three months, outperforming the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which has gained 4.2% over the same time frame.

In the longer term, CMS is up 20.3% on a YTD basis, and the shares have gained 22.9% over the past 52 weeks. In comparison, the SPX has gained 19.6% in 2024 and rallied 29.5% over the past year.

To confirm its bullish trend, CMS has been trading above its 50-day moving average since mid-July and the 200-day moving average since mid-April.

On Jul. 25, CMS reported its Q2 results. Its adjusted EPS of $0.66 beat the consensus estimates of $0.63. The company’s revenue of $1.61 billion fell short of Wall Street forecasts of $1.69 billion. CMS expects full-year adjusted EPS to be between $3.29 and $3.35. CMS shares gained 1.2% on the day the results were released.

Highlighting the contrast in performance, CMS’ competitor, Dominion Energy, Inc. (D), has outperformed both the stock and the broader index. D has gained 23.3% on a YTD basis.

Given the stock's strong recent price performance, analysts are moderately bullish about CMS' prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of "Moderate Buy" from 15 analysts in coverage. The mean price target is $69.07, which indicates that the stock trades at a premium.
