Andrew Coscoran broke a 40-year-old national record to win at the Meeting Nikaia in Nice on Saturday.
The Balbriggan man ran 3:32.68 in the 1500m to better Ray Flynn's national record of 3:33.50 set in Oslo in 1982.
Coscoran had already gone faster than Flynn this year when running a personal best of 3:33.49 mark at an indoor event in Birmingham this year.

But his brilliant run in Nice saw him become the fastest Irishman ever outdoors in the 1500m.
Coscoran was always in a prominent position before kicking down the home straight and just had enough in the tank to see off a fast-finishing Niels Laros of the Netherlands, who also claimed a national record.
There was another outstanding Irish performance in the same race as Nick Griggs smashed the U-20 national record in running 3:36.09.
The 18-year-old took four seconds off Cian McPhillips' previous national record when finishing in ninth place.
