Irish Lidl shopper left baffled as mystery three-letter code found written on blueberry

An Irish shopper in Lidl was left baffled after they found a mysterious code written on a piece of food.

They bought a packet of blueberries in the budget supermarket and were tucking into them along with some yogurt when they spotted three letters written on a blueberry.

In tiny writing, the letters 'ABS' were etched on the blueberry - with no apparent explanation.

In order to find answers, the confused Lidl shopper took to Reddit Ireland forum to ask others if they knew of a meaning behind the code.

They posted a picture of the find and wrote: "Found this code (ABS) on a blueberry from Lidl. What is it?"

Reddit users on the forum rushed to the comments to offer possible explanations.

One person replied to the post suggesting that the three letters were an acronym for 'anti-lock braking system'.

However, they wrote: "Not entirely sure why you'd need it on a blueberry though. Maybe to stop them rolling off your spoon?"

The continued: "Gonna bug me now, why would there be a code on a blueberry? Did it rub off the packaging maybe? What kind of machine could print on a blueberry? Are these fake Chinese blueberries?"

Another person joked: "Did you ever hear the phrase “abs are made in the kitchen”? This is what that phrase means."

However, one person on the thread had the real answer, found in a old news article.

They figured out where the code came from (Reddit)

It turns out, the letters on the blueberry were likely due to be from a CO2 etching device - that was aiming for the side of the box.

One woman previously explained: "They laser print the fruit boxes, it's gone through a little hole onto the blueberry instead of the box!"

After, the explanation, the original Reddit poster followed up on the post with a second picture. It showed the box the blueberries came in - with the matching letters 'ABS' clearly visible in the code on the side.

The shopper wrote: "I’m guessing this is how it got there, laser-engraved box and it got through the box to the blueberry."
