Irish driver arrested by Spanish police after being caught speeding at 285kmh in Porsche

An Irishman was arrested after he was caught speeding at 285kmh on a motorway in Spain last week.

He was spotted driving a Porsche with a British licence plate on the AP-6 in El Espinar near Madrid by a Spanish police helicopter that was carrying out speed checks in the area.

The supercar was clocked on the speed trap going at a whopping 285kmh - more than twice the speed limit, which is 120kmh on that section of the highway.

The high-speed drama was caught on camera by the police helicopter at 12.15pm on Thursday, June 9.

The driver "of Irish nationality" was eventually stopped in the municipality of Arévalo where he was arrested by a traffic patrol as the "alleged perpetrator of an alleged crime against road safety", according to local radio station, COPE.

The Segovia Civil Guard Traffic Subsector's Reporting Team have taken charge of the investigation and the subsequent proceedings.

Under Spanish laws, breaking the speed limit by over 80kmh on a motorway can result in a heavy fine and your license taken away for four years, or even jail time.

According to local media, the section of road where the car was caught speeding, has already seen 28 road accidents this year resulting in two deaths and leaving 11 seriously injured.
