Irish actor Ciara O’Callaghan said Jane Seymour is paving the way for women in the industry by still rocking leading roles in her 70s.
The Dubliner, best-known to many soap fans as Fair City’s Yvonne Doyle, is starring opposite the 71-year-old Bond legend on RTE’s new series Harry Wild.
She told the Irish Mirror: “It’s wonderful to see somebody like Jane Seymour who is in her 70s playing the lead in a show like this, and it gives hope for those of us, you know, still, you know, working our way up there. Yeah, I mean, it’s very inspiring, isn’t it to see that. And fairplay to her. It’s wonderful and more of that, please.”
Packed with an impressive female cast, which also includes her former The Clinic and Striking out co-star Amy Huberman, Ciara said the show is a sign of the changing times.
But she noted there’s still a way to go for opportunities for women working in the business, adding: “There’s some really fantastic female-driven dramas now being made that wouldn’t have been made in the past. I mean, you’ve everything like our own Sharon Horgan doing Catastrophe.
“And even over on the BBC Suranne Jones is playing so many brilliant roles. Sarah Lancashire and Catherine Kelly.
“All brilliant and all leading. So yeah, it’s wonderful to see that long may it last. And, you know, we’re not fully there yet, but someone like Jane is certainly making waves for all of us. I mean, not only does she look fantastic, her energy, and as you watch the show, I mean, she’s pretty much in every scene,
“Even from like a practical point of view of learning all those lines prepping, and working with different cast members all the time, because each episode is different.
“But she has wonderful energy. You’d never think she was the age she is. But I love that it’s just a number. I think you know, 70 now is the new 50.”
- Harry Wild airs on RTE One, Wednesdays at 9.35pm.
