Ireland weather: Warning in place for six counties as Met Eireann forecasts temperature plunge

There is a warning in place this morning for six northern counties as many wake up to thick fog as temperatures dropped overnight, leading to dangerous driving conditions.

Weather models are also showing a major temperature plunge nationwide, featuring lows of -4C off the coasts of Ireland in the coming days - however, forecasters say there is uncertainty around just how cold the air temperature on land will become.

A fog alert is in place for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry until 11:00 am on Tuesday morning, and the UK Met Office is warning that this “fog likely to cause some travel delays this morning.”

As for the Republic of Ireland, this morning will see “any overnight mist and fog tending to clear. Otherwise, it will be generally dry with hazy sunshine and just light southeast or variable breezes.

“Cool with highest temperatures of 6 degrees in the north to 10 degrees in the south. Turning cloudier in the far southwest with some rain developing by evening.”

Heading into Wednesday, Met Eireann predicts: “Scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will persist into Wednesday day, along with some mist and fog patches.

“Drying up from the south later though with some sunny spells. Highest temperatures 8 to 11 degrees, in mostly moderate southeast winds.”

On Thursday and Friday this week, “Most areas will be fully dry with sunny spells, however, a few showers will feed into east and southeast counties.

“Highest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees generally, in light to moderate southeast breezes.”

This weekend, there is some uncertainty, “however, current indications suggest there will be cloudy outbreaks of rain and drizzle, especially during Saturday.

“Southerly winds will gradually back easterly, and will no more than moderate in strength. Becoming colder with highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees.”

It looks as if this cold snap is likely to remain for the foreseeable future as one weather expert warns of uncertainty around just how cold it is due to get.

Alan O’Reilly confirmed on the Carlow Weather Twitter account: “Weather models showing the cool and settled weather is nailed on now for end of this week.

“Just how cold it gets next week is still uncertain but the risk of a prolonged cool are slowly increasing.

“Good time to check the heating supplies but also good to see a break from the rain.”
