Ireland weather: Met Eireann pinpoints areas set to be worst hit by big freeze as cold snap forecast

Freezing temperatures are forecast for most nights this week as a cold snap hits Ireland.

The country will see the mercury dip below zero with some areas set to experience the brunt of the frost and ice.

Met Eireann says the south and south east will see slighter warmer conditions overnight on Tuesday, meaning the rest of the country will see temperatures plummet.

Before then, Tuesday will have a cold and frosty start but any frost and ice will clear to leave a dry and bright day with long spells of sunshine.

However, there will be a little more patchy cloud in the northwest and it will turn cloudier in the south and southeast during the evening, with highest temperatures of 7 to 9C.

A forecaster said for Tuesday night: "Cold and generally dry with long clear spells to start but it will turn cloudier overnight with patchy drizzle developing in eastern and southern areas.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to 3C generally with frost in places, though it will be less cold in the south and southeast with temperatures of 3 to 5C. Temperatures will gradually rise overnight in a light to moderate easterly breeze.

"Quite dull and damp tomorrow with scattered patches of light rain and drizzle in the south and east spreading across the country during the morning and afternoon.

"More persistent rain will move into Connacht and Munster during the evening. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11C in light to moderate southeasterly winds.

"Rain will spread northeastwards across the country on Wednesday night. Clear spells and scattered showers will follow into Connacht and Munster as the rain clears overnight. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6C in light to moderate southerly winds, veering westerly later.

"Rain will gradually clear from the east and north through the morning [on Thursday] and early afternoon to leave a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, most frequent over the western half of the country with a slight chance of some hail later in the day. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10C."

They continued for Thursday night: "A generally dry night with clear spells and showers becoming more isolated. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4C in a light to moderate northwest breeze.

"Friday will be a bright day with sunny spells and well scattered light showers. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9C in a light to moderate northerly breeze.

"Another dry night with long clear spells, though there may be isolated drizzle patches near eastern and southern coasts. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4C in a light breeze.

"Some patchy drizzle will spread across the country from the east on Saturday but there will be a good deal of dry weather overall with sunny spells. A cool day with highest temperatures of 6 to 8C."
