Met Eireann suggests some areas expecting snow to start 2023 as grim conditions approach

Met Eireann’s latest forecast shows some sleet and snow hitting a number of areas over the coming days as people ring in the New Year.

The weather has been fairly up and down for most counties over the last few days, and it looks as if that uncertain trend is going to continue into the first days of 2023.

The Irish forecaster has warned of ‘isolated thunderstorms’ over the coming days as a low pressure system makes its way over Ireland - bringing with it more freezing temperatures.

Scattered outbreaks of rain will continue tonight with the potential for hail and isolated thunderstorms.

Some sleet is also possible over higher ground to the north and west with local frost setting in too.

It will be coldest in west Connacht and west Ulster with lows of -1 to +1, elsewhere lows will range from 2 to 6 degrees.

New Year's Day will be rather chilly with sunny spells and scattered passing showers through the day, some heavy with hail and isolated thunderstorms possible.

Highest temperatures of 4 and 8 degrees, in mostly moderate westerly breezes, coolest across the Ulster and Connacht. Some of the showers will turn wintry later across the northwest.

On Sunday night, things will become cold and frosty in many areas with long clear spells and just isolated wintry showers.

Lowest temperatures of -3 to zero degrees are expected and there will be areas with mist and fog forming in mostly light southwest breezes, with dense fog possible in parts.

On Monday, it will be a foggy and frosty start - it will be slow to clear and may linger locally in parts leading to hazardous driving conditions.

Otherwise Monday will be bright and largely dry day with low winter sunshine and just a few showers, mainly affecting coastal counties of the south and west.

It will remain very cold on Monday with highs generally ranging between 1 and 5 degrees in light or moderate southerly breezes.

Monday night wil be dry and quite cold with clear spells and a touch of frost in the north of the country.

However, it will turn less cold later as rain pushes in from the south with lowest temperatures of between -1 and +4 degrees expected early in the night.

Tuesday will feature patchy rain will clear on early Tuesday and it will become largely dry for a time in the morning.

However, a further spell of rain will spread from the south. A milder day with highest temperatures of between 7 and 12 degrees, mildest in the south. There will be a fresh to strong and gusty southerly breeze.

It will be windy on Tuesday night with widespread rain or drizzle but it will be mild with temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in strong and gusty southwest winds.

Wednesday will be fresh and blustery with sunny spells and showers - the showers frequent across the western half of the country.

Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in fresh and gusty westerly winds, easing towards evening.

It will be largely dry at first on Wednesday night, but a spell of rain will spread from the Atlantic later with lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.

On Thursday, it will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain, which will be heavy at times.

Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees are expected in the north and west, ranging 8 to 11 degrees in the east and south.
