A weather expert has pinpointed the day ‘winter starts’ this week as cooler temperatures and grim conditions become more frequent heading into December.
According to Alan O’Reilly on the ‘Carlow Weather’ Twitter account, “Winter starts Thursday.”
He said that we will also now see our weather patterns approaching from the east instead of the west in a winter switch-up.

Mr. O’Reilly wrote: “Instead of looking West for our Weather we will be looking East as our weather pattern changes.
“Cooler weather is likely from towards end of week as this animation of upper air temps show. However, just how cool and how long it will last is uncertain.”
As Thursday approaches, Met Eireann’s forecast predicts that it’ll become mainly sunny today as showers gradually become isolated, and there'll be largely dry conditions by evening.
Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees are expected alongside moderate west to northwest winds, which should eas to light winds by the evening.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, there will be mist and fog from the morning, which will be slow to clear from parts of the midlands and may linger through the day in places.
It will be generally dry with sunny spells otherwise, and highest temperatures of 5 degrees in the north to 11 degrees in the south/
It will remain cold where the fog persists and winds will be light variable. Rain and breezier conditions will develop in the southwest during the evening.
Wednesday will be dry with a few isolated showers on the coasts and highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in mainly light southeast winds.
There will be little change on Thursday, with sunny spells and mainly dry conditions - again a risk of showers on coasts. Highest temperatures will be around 7 to 9 degrees in light southeasterly breezes.
Winds will become easterly by Friday with showers expected along the east and south coasts but otherwise, it will remain mainly dry, with temperatures of just 6 or 7 degrees in the afternoon.
Current indications suggest a cold easterly wind through the weekend will continue to bring showers to coasts.
