A weather expert has given an update on the arrival of snow as Met Eireann’s forecast warned of showers becoming ‘wintry’ over the coming days.
The weather is due to take a bleak turn this week, after a few days of milder conditions, but areas of high ground are the only place where snow may arrive.
In a post on Twitter, Alan O’Reilly - of Carlow Weather - wrote: “A few people asking about snow at weekend. Latest models show risk of some wintry showers but mainly on high ground and in the West. I wouldn’t be expecting much for most areas.”
As for the general forecast, it will be breezy today with bright spells and scattered showers - some heavy in the west and north.
Top temperatures will range from 9 to 12 degrees in fresh and gusty west to southwest winds.
It will be mostly dry early on tonight and chilly for a time with lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.
Things will turn milder later on as outbreaks of rain and drizzle spread gradually from the southwest.
Thursday will see things becoming rather windy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading northeastwards over the country.
Showers will be heavier and more persistent falls in the west and southwest with the lengthiest dry spells in the east of the country.
Clear spells and a few showers will follow from the west later in the evening as rain clears into the Irish Sea and it will become very windy in the northwest.
Thursday night will be mostly dry with clear spells. It will be a rather chilly night with lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in moderate southwest winds.
The outlook for the weekend approach is “Very unsettled with cold and windy weather for a time over the weekend,” according to the Irish forecaster.
On Friday, a good deal of dry weather will arrive for most areas with just a few showers, mainly in the south and west.
However, towards the evening, outbreaks of rain will develop in the south and west and it will become windy.
Outbreaks of rain will then extend nationwide on Friday evening with toptemperatures of 7 to 11 degrees expected in freshening southerly winds.
On Friday night, a spell of rain will push northeastwards over the country, clearing to scattered showers later. It will become colder with lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees in fresh to strong southerly winds.
Saturday will see fresh and blustery conditions with sunny spells and scattered rain or hail showers along with the chance of sleet on high ground.
Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees are due in strong and gusty southerly winds.
It will continue to be windy on Saturday night with widespread showers, some of hail and lowest temperatures will drop to between 3 and 7 degrees in fresh to strong southwest winds.
Sunday will be very windy with sunshine and blustery showers, some with hail and thunder.
Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees are expected in strong and gusty southwest to west winds.
High seas are expected along the Atlantic seaboard with gales meanwhile on and, it will be windy overnight with clear spells and widespread blustery showers of rain or hail.
As for next week, the Irish forecaster currently states: “Staying unsettled next week with areas of low pressure pushing in from the Atlantic bringing very windy weather along with rain or showers”.
