Ireland to be hotter than some parts of Spain as 'jet stream' brings sizzling sun ahead of big weather change

Ireland is set to bask in some well overdue sun this Easter before a big weather change sees conditions change for the worse.

The mercury looks likely to rise to 17C on Friday and Saturday, making it warmer than some popular hotspots across Europe.

The warm conditions come as a jet stream of hot air rises up from France, with parts of the UK enjoying highs of 22C as a result of the weather system.

However, the balmy weather across Ireland won't last forever, with a big change expected from Sunday.

Temperatures are set to dip to 15C on Easter Sunday and to lows of just 1C that night.

It could also be a washout with heavy rain and the possibility of hail forecast by Met Eireann.

The week ahead also looks set to be "wet and cold" according to the national forecaster.

Before then, the rest of Good Friday will see scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle but drier and sunnier conditions in the southwest will extend across the country through the afternoon and evening.

A forecaster said: "It will be mild and humid with highest temperatures of 13 to 17C (warmest across Munster and Leinster) in a mostly light to moderate southwest breeze.

"Friday night will be mostly dry but turning rather misty or foggy with just the odd patch of drizzle in the north to begin with.

"Later in the night, patchy drizzle will move into the south. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7C, in light variable or southerly winds, freshening near western and southwestern coasts towards morning.

"Any overnight mist or fog will clear early on Saturday to give a mostly dry start with sunny spells, though patchy drizzle will affect southern counties.

"During the afternoon, thickening cloud along with outbreaks of rain will gradually move in across the western half of Ireland, heaviest closest to the Atlantic coast.

"Much of the east and northeast will likely stay dry with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17C generally in moderate to fresh southeasterly winds."

The outlook for the rest of the Easter weekend is unsettled and mild to start before turning cooler into the new week.

Here is Met Eireann's forecast for the days ahead:

Saturday night: Further outbreaks of rain occurring after-dark with some possibly heavy and persistent falls, leading to localised flooding. A mild and humid night with mist and fog in parts. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11C in a light southeasterly breeze.

Easter Sunday: A wet start in many areas with widespread falls of rain early, followed in turn by heavy showers with the chance of hail. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15C, but turning cooler as the rain clears. Breezy in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

Sunday night: Becoming largely dry with clear spells, though scattered showers will feed into western coastal areas. A cold night with lowest temperatures of 1 to 4C in light southwest breezes.

Monday: Feeling cooler with a mix of sunny spells and blustery showers, some possibly heavy with hail across the north. Highest temperatures of just 9 to 12C in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

Tuesday: Looking like a cool and wet day at present.
