Ireland's Lucy Quinn nominated for WSL Player of the Month for January

Republic of Ireland international Lucy Quinn is one of six nominees for the WSL Player of the Month for January.

The Birmingham City midfielder has been recognised for her role in the Blues’ upturn in form since the new year and could become the second Irish player to win the award this year after Katie McCabe in October.

She set up the opening goal as Birmingham stunned the league leaders, McCabe’s Arsenal, and won 2-0 at St Andrew’s to move off the bottom of the table.

A 5-0 defeat to Manchester United the following week saw the Blues drop back down to the relegation spot.

Quinn bagged another assist in the narrow 3-2 defeat to Reading two weeks ago but they bounced back to advance in the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old started for Darren Carter’s side as they overcame Sunderland in the first round of the Cup after being taken all the way to extra time by the Mackems.

Quinn made her Ireland debut in the 3-2 friendly win over Australia in September, seeing her free kick rebound in off the keeper to give the Girls in Green an early lead.

And she added her first undisputed goal in November as Vera Pauw’s side recorded their biggest-ever win, an 11-0 success over Georgia at Tallaght Stadium in World Cup qualifying.

Quinn tweeted: “Very unexpected to see myself nominated. The whole squad had a great January and could have been any of us.”

Man United duo Aoife Mannion and Leah Galton are also up for the award, as are Arsenal’s Beth Mead, Manchester City’s Georgia Stanaway and Natasha Dowie of Reading.
