Ireland accept invite to eight-team Spanish tournament

Ireland will prepare for their World Cup clash with Sweden by taking part in a tournament in Spain next month.

Vera Pauw has accepted an invitation to the Pinatar Cup in Murcia involving Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia and Wales.

Ireland are guaranteed three matches and will play Poland on February 16 with the winner meeting Hungary or Russia in the semi-finals.

If Ireland lose to Poland, they will face the beaten side from the Hungary-Russia clash and potentially progress to games that will determine third, fifth and seventh spot.

Ireland and Slovakia have agreed that they cannot meet each other as they are already in the same World Cup qualifying group.

"It is important that we get together as a squad and play at least one game before we take on Sweden in April,” said Pauw.
