Irate businessman brands barber shop's plan for alterations as 'quite revolting'

An angry objector has described plans to enhance the offering at a popular Ayrshire barber’s shop as “quite revolting.”

Owners at the McIntyre Barberista, on Prestwick Main Street, want to introduce outdoor seating at the shop — where punters can sit, relax and have a freshly brewed coffee while they wait for a haircut.

But an Ayrshire businessman has slapped in a strongly-worded letter of objection to South Ayrshire Council, warning that if the proposals are approved, it’ll prompt other business people to think twice about investing in the town.

The proposals for outdoor seating at the shop, along with a part change of use and alterations, are currently listed as ‘pending consideration’ on South Ayrshire Council’s online planning portal.

And in his objection, John Keenan, from North Harbour Street, Ayr, said: “I wish to intimate my strong objection to this application.

“The premises are currently being run as a barber. But apparently they have been selling coffee and food for some time now.

“I own four commercial properties in the vicinity of this shop and have received no notification of the application.”

His objection goes on: “There are several class 3 businesses currently operating in the immediate area and I don’t believe they are applying to cut hair.

“I feel the property should be left operating purely as a barber as it has been for numerous years.”

He added: “The idea that you can have you hair cut and have your lunch I find quite revolting. Environmental issue?”

Mr Keenan ends his letter by saying: “I have rented my properties for over 40 years in Prestwick.

“This application makes me question why people bother to invest in this town if this application is approved.”

Owner Donna McIntyre previously stated that the shop, which boasts old-fashioned records, along with a vintage scooter, provided a “nicer experience.” And along with the barberista theme, it made customers “quite happy.”

And a statement to support their application says: “McIntyre’s Gents Hairdressers on Prestwick Main Street has been transformed to McIntyre Barberista, creating a vibrant community space for men to enjoy a chat, listen to music and order a coffee while waiting for a haircut.

“The ultra-trendy barbers is kitted out with funky new signage, a record player, comfy chairs and even a gorgeous vintage scooter.

“Donna hopes the space can help those who may be isolated or lonely get out and socialise post-lockdown.”

Donna does have support on her side.

Ian Douglas, of Meadowpark, Ayr, stated in his letter: “Donna has been my hairdresser for a number of years.

“This alteration to her shop makes it a vibrant destination. I fully support this application.”

South Ayrshire planners will rule on the blueprints at a future date.
