Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed deep sorrow over the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in a statement shared on his official account on Saturday. Khamenei referred to Sinwar's death as a 'painful' loss for the 'Resistance Front,' a network of Iran-backed regional proxies that includes Hamas. Despite the loss, Khamenei vowed that the movement would persevere.
Khamenei emphasized that the 'Resistance Front' has not been deterred by previous losses of prominent figures and will continue its mission following Sinwar's martyrdom. Sinwar, who was believed by Israel to have played a key role in the recent Gaza conflict, was killed by Israeli forces during a routine ground patrol in Rafah.
In his statement, Khamenei addressed Muslim nations and the youth of the region, praising Sinwar for his lifelong dedication to the struggle against Israel. He stated that martyrdom was a fitting end for a leader like Sinwar, who had committed himself to the cause.
Israel confirmed that Sinwar was the mastermind behind the October 7 attack that triggered the recent hostilities in Gaza. Hamas, the militant group to which Sinwar belonged, has acknowledged his death.
