‘Internet always wins' - Newcastle United's Callum Wilson reveals truth behind gruesome tooth injury

Callum Wilson admits he has been bombarded with memes since suffering a horrific tooth injury against Arsenal. A lengthy stoppage midway through the first half allowed the Magpies' number nine to receive dental treatment following a collision with an Arsenal player.

Gruesome images of Wilson’s tooth hanging by a thread were broadcast by Sky Sports and provoked a stir on social media, with supporters quick to make jokes at the 30-year-old’s expense. The bizarre injury did not deter the striker on the field as his man-of-the-match display helped inspire United to a 2-0 win.

Wilson - who wore the captain’s armband throughout his valiant performance - has since repaired the damage and opened up about the incident on the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast.

“Well, it's one of them,” he said. “I took an elbow into the lip in the first half so I’d split my lip anyway. I was playing with a split lip but you can get over that.

“And then we had a corner and all of a sudden, boom, the tooth got hit and I was like ‘oh my word’. Straight away I felt it go back into my mouth but the worst thing was it was still attached, so it was hanging in an awkward position.

“I had to go over to the doctor, put my hand over my mouth to say my tooth is hanging out, but the only way you can look is for me to move my hand… and you know what it's like.

“As soon as you move your hand, the cameras are straight in front of me. The internet always wins and I was getting sent pictures and memes left, right and centre.

“It’s alright, it’s sorted now. It’s as good as it's going to be until the end of the season then we're going to get something properly sorted out.”
