The high the New England Patriots were riding after their Week 7 upset win over the Buffalo Bills was short-lived. It was back to reality on Sunday with the team dropping a lopsided loss on the road to the Miami Dolphins.
There were certainly moments where it felt like the Patriots were in the game and had a real opportunity to crash the homecoming for the fish at Miami Gardens. And then Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would hit Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle for a first down or touchdown to steal any hope of an upset.
In many ways, this was a reality check game for a Patriots team that simply isn’t good enough to win consistently.
Mac Jones threw another bad interception on a drive that would have ended in points for New England, and the offensive line turned back into Swiss cheese. Meanwhile, the defense, which has been the one unit the Patriots have been able to depend on this season, got absolutely torched by the Dolphins’ otherworldly offense.
There was no chance the Patriots were winning this game.
The team is now 2-6 on the season with any hope of making the playoffs likely dead in the water. With the trade deadline slated for October 31, it puts the Patriots in the undesired position of potentially being sellers. It also puts Bill Belichick’s future in jeopardy.
Could this disastrous season end with the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach being fired, and the team making the decision to start from scratch?
Everything is on the table at this point for New England.
