Instant analysis of Dolphins selecting RB Devon Achane in the third round

With their second selection of the 2023 NFL draft, at 84th overall, the Miami Dolphins selected Texas A&M running back Devon Achane.

Achane joins a running back room that also boasts Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. All four of those veterans were set to hit the market this offseason, but they were all brought back. Mostert and Wilson are the only ones with more than a year on their current deal.

There’s not much of a penalty for the Dolphins if they were to release Gaskin (none) or Ahmed ($300,000) before the season starts, so there’s a chance that the Aggie could take one of their jobs in 2023. As a weapon that can line up all over the field, Achane offers head coach Mike McDaniel something that the other two don’t.

If Miami were to keep all of their current backs, Gaskin and Ahmed are only on one-year deals, so Achane could get an opportunity to adjust to the NFL game without taking on too much responsibility as a rookie.

General manager Chris Grier used the 2022 draft as a class for the future, and he seems to be doing the same so far in 2023.
