Inspired by Li Na and Liu Xiang, Qinwen Zheng wins China's first Olympic tennis singles gold in Paris

NEW DELHI: Loud cries of "Jia You!" in Mandarin erupted from every corner of Court Philippe Chatrier on Saturday, just before Qinwen Zheng delivered the opening serve of a triumph that would deliver China's first Olympic tennis singles gold medal. Supporters were also waving the red-and-yellow flags of their nation.

This expression roughly translates to "Let's go!" and literally means "Add oil!" or "Hit the gas!" Just when Donna Vekic of Croatia, Zheng's opponent in the women's final of the 2024 Paris Games, returned to the net, those yells started up again. And on a cloudy, breezy afternoon, they were heard again and again whenever Zheng's plans came to pass, according to AP.
