Inside the $140k goody bags given to Will Smith and all the Oscar nominees

It's been an emotional 24 hours as the world still tries to recover from the high drama of the 94th Academy Awards show. In case you've been living under a rock, Hollywood actor Will Smith marched onto the prestigious gilded stage and slapped Chris Rock (pretty hard) in the face after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pickett-Smith's hair.

It was very unpleasant all around for everyone there and for us at home in our PJs. But hopefully, now the stars and starlets have had a chance to dust off the glitter from their suits, and recovered from their champagne hangovers, they may have had a peek inside the goody bags handed to them on their way out the door.

The Oscar gift bags have become a source of great interest (for normal people) as we like to imagine what's inside and guess what? This year, we were actually sent one! No, obviously that's not true. But we do know what's in them.

What's in the bag?

The gift bags, prepared by LA-based marketing company Distinctive Assets, are given to select nominees including Will Smith, Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington, Jessica Chastain, Olivia Coleman and Kristen Stewart. Some 28 lucky nominees get thousands of dollars worth of luxury items to take home, for free.

Highlights inside the bag include:

  • A $12,000 'Celebrity Arms' liposuction procedure from cosmetic surgeon Dr Thomas Su
  • The title of 'Lord' or 'Lady of Glencoe', along with a plot of actual land in Scotland
  • $25,000 worth of home renovations from Los Angeles-based Maison Construction
  • Some luxury 'flavor wrapped' popcorn from Opopop
  • Up to $10,000 worth of 'treatments and rejuvenation procedures' from Dr Konstantin Vasyukevich
  • A four-night stay for two at the Golden Door luxury resort and spa in Escondico, California .worth $15,000
  • A $1,200 life coaching session with wellness expert Kayote Joseph
  • Ariti gold-infused olive oil
  • Personal training from Diego Sebastian's DS Raw Fitness

Nice work if you can get it, but some feel that the decadence of the whole 'gift bag' thing is a bit tasteless. Comedian Ricky Gervais was asked what he'd say if he were presenting the awards show and he tweeted: "I'd start with 'Hello. I hope this show helps cheer up the ordinary people watching at home. If you’re unemployed for example, take some comfort in the fact that even if you had a job, your salary probably wouldn't be as much as the goody bag all the actors have just been given.'"
